What is ovulation and how does it occur?

Ovulation is an event that happens during our cycle, where an egg is released from one of our ovaries.

Ovaries contain fluid-filled sacs called follicles that each contain eggs. We have two ovaries and, typically, the one releasing the egg alternates each cycle.

Once the egg is released, it is either fertilised and becomes an embryo, or it is released from your body during your period.

Sounds simple enough, but there is an amazingly intricate stream of events that needs to occur within your body for ovulation to happen.

Periods and hormones and cycles

Our menstrual symptoms are messages from our body telling us about our internal health. Messages we’ve been taught to ignore or medicate so we can ‘get on with things’. Learning to listen to these messages (and talk about them) will help shift our society beyond the patriarchy and into equality. It’s time people acknowledged that all humans have hormones and emotions, not just us. Testosterone is a hormone. Anger is an emotion. Isn’t it interesting how that became ignored? In this chapter, we’ll discover just how incredible each of our hormones are and how to understand and connect with our menstrual cycle so that we can thrive.

Mental Health

Your mind and your body are one and the same. And the health of your mind can influence the health of the rest of your body (and vice versa). In this chapter, we will look at the biological (internal body) systems that underpin our mental health, the conditions that can affect us and the many ways we can seek help and improve our mental health.

What we hope is that, by the end of this chapter, you will feel how important it is to prioritise your mental health, how connected your mental health is to your physical health, and how acceptable and normal it is to receive support from mental health practitioners.

Welcome to My Wellness Journal

The information contained in these pages should be taught in school as a matter of priority. It should be taught so thoroughly that it is engrained knowledge – like knowing that the sun keeps us warm and that grass needs water to grow.

The fact that it isn’t taught to us in this way is a disservice and it’s affecting our health. Research has found that body literacy – AKA the understanding of how the body works and how health practices and conditions affect your body – is essential for people’s health. We need to understand health to improve our chances of remaining healthy.
